In
1874 the current Hydrographic
and Oceanographic Service
of the Chilean Navy
was created, becoming
the first cartographic
national agency; the
first one created in
Latin America and No.
12 in the world. The
same year it was founded
it begins to issue
notices to mariners,
through the Hydrographic
news Bulletin.
Through the years, the Hydrographic Service has implemented new methodologies, due to a constant concern to provide mariners onboard all the available information that would allow them a safe displacement at sea, with their charts and updated nautical publications. That is how to this date it provides, either national or foreign, war, merchant, fishing or sailing vessels, with cartography and updated nautical publications on the date of their delivery or purchase at a Sale Agency. From that moment, the users of the above-mentioned navigational aids are responsible for incorporating information and corrections produced thereafter and which are spread by SHOA in the “News Bulletin to Mariners”.
This Bulletin which
is monthly published
contains all the information
and hydrographic news
that have occurred during
that period, and it
helps to correct the
charts and nautical
publications used onboard
vessels and that are
affected by such news.
This is very important
for navigational safety,
because charts and nautical
publications are corrected
at the moment of its
distribution, but many
changes that are necessary
to consider may occur
later on, such as: buoys
out of place, turned
off, inaugurated or
remote lights, new sounding
lines, changes in the
characteristics of ports,
etc.
Their
commitment to provide
safety to navigation
and optimal quality of
service to users of mapping
edited by SHOA, it reflects
this more than century-old
publication, which since
October 2003 is available
online, its main body,
first in html and in
PDF. Under continuous
improvement, since January
2008, published the main
body of the Bulletin
Notices to Mariners,
and replacement pages
involving nautical publications
that SHOA edits, for
download from the web.
