SEA SURFACE TEMPERATURE (SST) (1950 - 2011)

The Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service of the Navy is the institution in charge of maintaining the environmental station network nationally.

For several years, Mean Sea Level (MSL) and Sea Surface Temperature (SST) data have been registered. The latter obtained between the years 1950 and 1998 by an observer who manually registered the sea temperature using a mercury thermometer. At present, we have an automatic recording system with thermistors that transmit almost in real time via satellite.

Data from SST are monthly sent to the Climate Warning Bulletin (BAC) of the Permanent Commission for the South Pacific (CPPS) (http://www.inocar.mil.ec/index.php). It is worth noting that data provided to BAC correspond to the average of recorded temperatures at 10 in the morning (methodology agreed among countries of CPPS). Whereas data submitted to PROFC and that presented in this webpage are calculated from all daily observations.

In this page, we can observe historical records of STT monthly values for 4 stations of the north and central areas of Chile from the year 1950 to 2011.
