OFFICER FROM HYDROGRAPHIC AND OCEANOGRAPHIC SERVICE OF THE NAVY (SHOA) RECEIVED POST GRADUATE CERTIFICATION ON OCEANIC BATHIMETRY FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF NEW HAMPSHIRE

           
          After having completed the postgraduate course in Ocean Bathymetry at the University of New Hampshire (UNH) in Durham, USA, First Lieutenant Mr. Felipe BARRIOS B., currently Head of the Technical Division of the Department of Oceanography SHOA, received certification FIG / IHO Category "A" and its corresponding degree.

          The course was executed by a grant from the Nippon Foundation, in setting on project GEBCO (General bathymetric chart of the Oceans) from the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Committee of UNESCO and aims to train professionals for the acquisition and multibeam hydrographic data management including issues of acoustics, physical oceanography, positioning systems, structure of ocean basins, design, planning and generation of bathymetric products.

          The postgraduate course lasted a year, over a period of practice, as part of a multibeam hydrographic survey on Pavlov Islands, Alaska, aboard the hydrographicsurvey vessel of the NOAA R /V "Rainier" and professional internship at Naval Oceanographic Office (NAVOCEANO), from the U.S. Navy.

          The training allowed us to know the latest developments and new technologies for hydrographic surveys and multibeam bathymetric data management, directly benefiting the activities and new instrumental of SHOA.
