On January 19- 21, in Guayaquil, Ecuador, the VIII Regular Meeting of the Permanent Commission for the South Pacific (CPPS) took place, in which were addressed topics on Marine Living Resources, Fisheries and oceanic scientific Research of interest for Chile, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru, member states of this Organization.
The Director of the Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service (SHOA), Captain Mariano ROJAS B. and the Chief of the “ocean-atmosphere interaction” Section of SHOA, Mrs. Jenny MATURANA A. were part of the national delegation, headed by Minister Counselor Mr. José FERNÁNDEZ B., from the Ministry of Foreign Relations.
In the meeting they analyzed the reports from the Secretary General, frin the Director of Scientific Affairs and from the Director of Economic Affairs, approving 16 resolutions on several relative topics, underlining, among others, the potentiation of a Tsunami Warning and Climate Warning System at regional level and the designation of new members from the General Secretariat of CPPS, responsible for coordinating and leading the Organization for the next 4 years. It is worth noting that Rear Admiral Hector SOLDI S. (Peru), will assume as Secretary General, receiving the position from Mr. Gonzalo PEREIRA P. (Chile) and Captain Rodrigo NUÑEZ G. (Chile) will assume as Director of Scientific Affairs; In addition, it was approved that the meeting on the Regional Tsunami Early Warning System will be held in September 2010 in Valparaíso, being SHOA the venue for this meeting.
