CHILEAN NAVY HYDROGRAPHIC AND OCEANOGRAPHIC SERVICE

To publicize the work of the Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service of the Navy (SHOA), the Service welcomed 25 members of the Circle of Professionals of Italian origin, on November 25. The delegation was led by its President, Mrs. Maria Pia Mastrantonio and Honorary Consul of Italy in Valparaíso, Mr. Franco Dezerega Pitto.

Upon arrival, the Deputy Director of SHOA, Captain Mr. Enrique Silva Villagra received and welcomed the delegation, and made a presentation about the main tasks and responsibilities of the Service.

In this regard, he referred, in the first instance, to the development of the National Nautical Cartography and the importance it has for the development of various activities in the maritime, commercial, tourism and scientific fields, among others.

Then, he mentioned the contribution that is made to the Marine Scientific Research through the National Oceanographic Committee (CONA), an organization that brings together various institutions involved in the field of marine sciences, and whose main task is to advise and coordinate national agencies dedicated to the research of the ocean and its natural resources.

Later, Commander Silva explained how the National Tsunami Warning System (SNAM) works, the procedures and protocols carried out in conjunction with the agencies involved in emergency management, stressing how important it is that the community understands the processes and actions performed during these events, emphasizing self-care, and remaining vigilant and prepared.

Finally, he stressed the technological capacity of the Operations Room of SNAM, which is in an ongoing process of modernization, always according to the needs and new demands involving timely and efficient responses to the authorities and the community in general, information they could verify on first-hand, after visiting this Unit.
