CHILEAN NAVY HYDROGRAPHIC AND OCEANOGRAPHIC SERVICE

On the morning of November 15, members of the Asociación de Prácticos Autorizados de Canales de Chile(APAC), visited the premises of the Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service of the Navy (SHOA), led by Vice President of the organization, Captain Mr. Nelson Fredes Rocco.

The Deputy Director of SHOA, Captain Mr. Enrique Silva Villagra, received the delegation and talked about the most important aspects of the duties of the Service, with emphasis on the development of the National Nautical Cartography. In this regard, he explained how the planning and requirements of hydrographic activities during the year are generated. These activities are carried out with the support of the different units that are deployed in the Naval Zones throughout the country.

Additionally, Commander Silva specified the areas in which work has been done and the future Charts that will be published as a result, and how those Charts will complement the Files used by the various ships transiting along the coasts and waterways of the country.

Subsequently, APAC members visited the Department of Hydrography of the Service where the staff explained the process that takes place both in the field and as well as in the office for the elaboration of the paper and electronic Nautical Chart.

At the end of the tour, the delegation visited the Operations Room of the National Tsunami Warning System (SNAM), where they were able to appreciate first-hand the professional and technical skills that work together in this office, whose purpose is to deliver a timely and effective response to the authorities involved in the management of emergencies associated with the generation of a tsunamigenic event off the coast of Chile.
