CHILEAN NAVY HYDROGRAPHIC AND OCEANOGRAPHIC SERVICE

On board the OPV Piloto Pardo, on 23 October, staff from the Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service of the Navy (SHOA), performed the mooring of a Watchkeeper Buoy in the bay of Concepción.

The purpose of installation of this instrument is to obtain records of the waves to maintain a complete database of the area, contributing to the forecast of waves performed by the Meteorological Service of the Navy. Additionally, this will allow different oceanographic parameters to be measured, including information about currents, wind and sea surface temperature.

With the anchoring of this buoy, the ocean observing systems are optimized, obtaining oceanographic data to be used in institutional and port operational activities, besides providing basic information for the development of scientific studies.
