Between November 08 and 11 of this year took place at the Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service of the Chilean Navy (SHOA) THE 18th Work Meeting of the Advisory Board on the Law of the Sea (ABLOS). This Board is composed of the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) and the International Association of Geodesy (IAG), as well as the United Nations Division for Ocean Affairs and Law of the Sea (DOALOS). In this opportunity, the Meeting had representatives from Brazil, Canada, Chile, Denmark, Indonesia, Japan and United Kingdom.
The Director of SHOA, Captain Patricio S. CARRASCO H., started the Meeting with a brief welcome speech thanking the presence of the different delegates.
During the week, apart from ABLOS central meeting, they seize the opportunity to discuss topics related to the Editorial Committee of ABLOS Technical Panel, for the publication of the Manual on the technical aspects of the United Nations convention on the Law of the Sea, 1982. Also it took place a work table with the participation of technical staff from SHOA in which they shared the experiences about works performed on the Continental Shelf. Foreign delegates had also the opportunity to visit the facilities of the Service, where they were able to observe the different tasks being developed in the Hydrographic- Oceanographic- Cartographic area, both in office and on site.
It is important to mention that the main objective of the Advisory Board on the Law of the Sea (ABLOS) is to provide advice in the area of Geodesy-Hydrography and other Sciences in the aspects of the Law of the Sea, to sponsor organizations and to its Member States.
