CHILEAN NAVY HYDROGRAPHIC AND OCEANOGRAPHIC SERVICE

On Wednesday December 18th, at premises of the Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service of the Navy (SHOA, by its initials in Spanish) it took place the first meeting of the Technical Group, to determine the drafting of a publication intended for the civilian population, with recommendations on how to react in the event of a tsunami; joint initiative of the National Emergency Office and Public Safety of the Ministry of Interior (ONEMI, by its initials in Spanish) and the SHOA. The meeting was attended by representatives of the Ministry of Public Work, Health, and Housing and Urban Affairs; the Asociación Chilena de Seguridad (Chilean Safety Association); the Mutual de Seguridad (Safety Cooperative); Chilean Fire Brigades, and the Red Cross, who were welcomed by the Chief of Division of the National Tsunami Warning System (SNAM, by its initials in Spanish) Lieutenant Mr. Nicolás GUZMÁN, and the Chief of the Civil Protection Unit of the ONEMI, Mr. Camilo GREZ.

During the meeting, the target for the assembling of this technical group was presented, which will be in charge of elaborating a document that will update the recommendations for the community in the event of tsunami, with a multidisciplinary approach delivered by the different specialists of the different institutions. The working agenda was also discussed; the establishment of a base line and the identification of critical aspects to be analyzed.

The meeting finished with a visit to the Operations Room of the SNAM, where all the attendants were explained about the equipment and existing procedures to develop their job.
