CHILEAN NAVY HYDROGRAPHIC AND OCEANOGRAPHIC SERVICE

As part of the Earthquake and Tsunami Drill Plan for this year, in the program “Chile Preparado” (Chile Prepared) the Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service of the Navy (SHOA), the National Office for Emergencies of the Ministry of Interior (ONEMI), and the National Seismic Centre (CSN) participated on an earthquake and tsunami drill in the region of Bio Bío, on November 20th. The three institutions applied protocols and evacuation plans in the communities of Cobquecura, Trehuaco, Coelemu, Tomé, Penco, Talcahuano, Hualpén, San Pedro de la Paz, Coronel, Lota, Arauco, Lebu y Tirúa.

The Operations Room of the National Tsunami Warning System (SNAM) upon reception of the information provided by the CSN, simulating an 8.5 earthquake in magnitude, issued the corresponding alarm for the entire National Territory. Using this information, ONEMI had everybody in the affected area evacuated right after the corresponding alarm was activated.

It is important to mention that the SNAM carries out daily communication tests with the CSN and the ONEMI to verify the effectiveness of the systems and the compliance of the protocols, as well as maintaining a permanent contact with the institutions to accomplish excellent team work.
