During September 4th and 5th of 2014, members of the Hydrography Department of the Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service of the Navy (SHOA) were part of the second annual session of the National Committee of Antarctic Geographic Names, which took place for the first time in the city of Punta Arenas.

During the event, which was also attended by representatives from the National Directorate of Borders and Limits of the Nation, the Geographic Military Institute, the Aero-photogrammetric Service of the Chilean Air Force, the Antarctic Directorate of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and from the Chilean Antarctic Institute, several presentations were made related to national Antarctic activity, such as the development of the National Program of Antarctic Science, the Project Antarctic Repository lead by the Universidad de Magallanes and news associated with the data base of geographic names managed by the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR).

It is worth mentioning that the National Committee of Antarctic Geographic Names, which was presided over by the Director of the SHOA, Rear admiral Patricio Carrasco, seeks to suggest procedures for the designation of geographic names in the Chilean Antarctic Territory, as well as for the Antarctic as a whole, through the update of the data base on Antarctic geographic names considering its use on world atlas, aerial, nautical and terrestrial charts and other documents, in any format used in Chile.

The job done by the committee confirms the paramount importance of our presence in the Ice Continent.
