As a way to strengthen links and show the job done by the Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service of the Chilean navy (SHOA), the Director of the Service, Rear admiral Patricio Carrasco, welcomed the Chief of the Fifth Police Area General Julio Pineda, who was accompanied by the Prefect of Valparaíso Colonel Fernando Bywaters and the Prefect of Viña del Mar Colonel Luis Ulloa, on Monday August 25th.

Upon arrival, Rear admiral Carrasco made a presentation about the most important aspects of the duties of the SHOA, emphasizing the job done in the National Tsunami Warning System (SNAM) and all the process of modernization that it is being developed in terms of procedures and equipment used in the Operations Room of the SNAM. All of which is to respond in a timely and efficient manner to the authorities and community in general, when facing an earthquake and possible tsunami in the coasts of our country.

Later, the visitors headed to the Hydrography Department where they could learn about the Hydro-Cartographic Flow and the Simulator of Electronic Nautical Charts. Then, they toured the Historical Exposition Room and the Operations Room of the SNAM; to end the tour in the Shelter of the SNAM, which is a backup system equipped to provide continuity to the processes of communication and monitoring, in case the main room of such system could not continue functioning.

By the end of the visit, General Pineda, apart from expressing his gratitude for the invitation and the special attention he had during his visit, expressed how important is for Carabineros de Chile to know about the job being done by the SHOA since "when it comes to facing an emergency we must very closely, because we are in charge of evacuation, mainly in the coastal area. As a policeman, and as a Chilean, to see the improvements of this entity, which has great impact in Chile, is truly interesting".
