On Wednesday August 12th, the Director of the Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service of the Navy, Rear admiral Patricio Carrasco, received in the Service a group of former professors of the Alma Mater of the Officers of the Chilean Navy, as a way to repay all the hard work performed by the instructors of the Naval School “Arturo Prat”.

During the activity, attended also by the Director of the School, Captain Mr. Claudio Yañez; the current Dean of the Civil Professors Department, Mrs. Fresia Aros; and Mr. Hugo Lucares who was the Dean for many years; Rear admiral Carrasco, very emotionally, expressed the importance that has for the SHOA to be able to open its doors to those who, in one way or another, forged the spirit and body of the students, now Service Officers.

After a presentation where all of the most important aspects of the Service were shown, the professors visited the Operations Room of the National Tsunami Warning System (SNAM), where they learned about the procedures which take place when facing an emergency.

For the professor Edmundo González, who worked for over 36 years in the institution, to be able to able to learn about what his students are doing is extremely rewarding. “I helped with the education of the Director of the SHOA and to see my former students as Admirals now gives me a great nostalgia and allows me saying that I have accomplished my task.” Professor Gonzalez, who is also the son of the former Director of the Hydrographic Institute of the navy, Captain Ernesto González, said “what I have learned today, Chile should too”.
